Building Draculaura’s Look From the Ground Up
The layering order is the first thing to settle. The fishnet top goes on against your skin, and everything else builds over it. A long-sleeve black fishnet with a snug fit is the foundation—stretchy mesh holds its shape better than stiff netting, and a cotton blend will breathe through a long day. Because the mesh is transparent, a black bralette or tank underneath keeps things covered without adding bulk. The sleeves need to reach your wrists, since the vest leaves the arms completely exposed.
The pink vest is the piece worth the most effort. A fitted magenta or deep pink vest with buttons down the front, cinched at the waist, gives the slim silhouette the character has. If you can only find white or light-colored vests, fabric dye gets you to the right shade—just follow the dye instructions precisely to avoid streaks. The vest can be worn open or buttoned depending on how it fits, but it needs to contrast sharply against the black fishnet beneath it.
For the skirt, a short white pleated or flared style with lace trim at the hem is what you’re after. If your skirt doesn’t have lace, sew a strip of white lace fabric along the bottom edge—this detail gives the outfit its soft, girly edge. The skirt should sit high on your waist so it pairs cleanly with the vest, and that high waistline also helps the proportions match the character’s doll-like silhouette.
The ruffled collar goes under the vest. A detachable lace collar is the easiest route, and many costume shops sell them separately. If you’d rather make one, sew a strip of white lace or ruffled fabric onto a band and attach Velcro at the back. The collar should sit at the base of your neck with the ruffles peeking out from under the vest—this Victorian detail sells the vampire side of her look.
Black fishnet stockings cover the legs, matching the top. Full-length tights with a larger weave pattern hold up better than cheap ones that snag. Layering them over solid pink tights lets the pink show through the netting and ties the whole outfit together visually. This trick helps in convention lighting, which tends to wash out finer details.
The bat choker and safety pin earrings are small but worth getting right. A pink bat-shaped choker in faux leather or fabric adds personality, and it should sit snugly against your neck without digging in. Silver safety pin earrings are sold as fashion jewelry at most accessory stores, and they’re lightweight enough to wear all day. If you can’t find them, small silver studs with a similar angular shape work as a fallback.
Knee-high pink boots with laces and a chunky heel are the footwear. Shiny vinyl or faux leather matches the character best. These are genuinely hard to find in the right shade, so if you spot white knee-high boots, spray-paint them pink using paint made for vinyl or fabric. The laces should run the full height of the boot, and chunky heels are far easier to walk in than stilettos if you’re standing around for hours.
The wig carries the most recognition value. A straight black wig with pink streaks, falling past the shoulders, with straight bangs that frame the face is the target. Many costume wig retailers sell Draculaura-specific wigs with the pink highlights already built in. If the wig looks too shiny, a light dusting of dry shampoo tones it down. The bangs need to sit straight across your forehead—trim them carefully if they’re uneven, and use a wig brush to keep the strands neat.
Fangs should be short and sharp rather than long and dramatic. Most vampire fang kits come with molding material so you can fit them to your teeth. Practice talking and drinking water with them before the event, since they affect your speech at first.
Makeup follows a specific pattern. Pale foundation creates the porcelain base, and pink blush on the cheeks gives the rosy look she always has. For the eyes, blend pink and purple shadows, darker at the outer corners, with a sharp eyeliner wing. False lashes or heavy mascara complete the eye look. The heart-shaped beauty mark goes under one eye, drawn with a fine-tip black eyeliner. Bright pink lipstick finishes the face, and a lip liner keeps it from bleeding.
The umbrella is the prop that ties everything together. A small black lace parasol is ideal. If you can only find a plain black umbrella, glue pink ribbon around the edges or wrap the handle in pink ribbon. It’s meant to be carried, not opened, so weight matters less than appearance—this piece adds charm and makes you instantly recognizable at a distance.
Once everything is assembled, the order of dressing matters. Fishnet top first, then the vest, collar tucked under. Skirt and stockings go on before the boots. The wig and fangs go last so they’re not disturbed while you’re dressing. Earrings and choker finish the accessories. Hold the umbrella and you’re ready.
Because the costume has multiple layers, breathable fabrics make a real difference. The fishnet top should be a cotton blend if possible, and the vest shouldn’t be lined with anything heavy. Bring a small bag with extra lipstick, bobby pins for the wig, and band-aids in case the boots rub—those are the only practical items you’ll need. Everything else is about getting the details right.
