Vance Hopper’s outfit in The Black Phone reflects late-1970s suburban Colorado street culture at its rawest. As the local arcade brawler obsessed with protecting his pinball high score, his clothing is utilitarian, sun-faded, and visibly weathered from fights and teenage neglect.
The silhouette relies on heavy contrast: bare, sleeveless arms set against a frayed denim vest, grounded by bootcut denim, heavy work boots, and a wild head of feathered dirty-blonde hair. Because the base pieces are everyday garments, selling the costume comes down to texture, distressing, and getting the specific small details right.
The Vest and Base Layer
The foundation of Vance’s upper half is a plain white ribbed tank top, worn snugly against the torso and tucked cleanly into the jeans. An ordinary ribbed cotton undershirt fits the period accurately. If the shirt looks too bright out of the package, soaking it briefly in diluted black tea or washing it several times knocks down the stark modern brightness to match the film’s muted color palette.
Over the tank, Vance wears a light-to-medium wash denim vest with raw, frayed armholes where sleeves were cut away. The vest features classic trucker-style flap pockets and metal shank buttons down the front, typically left open or partially buttoned. Running coarse sandpaper or a wire brush along the armhole hems, pocket flaps, and waistband softens the fibers and pulls out loose white threads, giving the denim an authentic lived-in edge rather than a factory-fresh cut.
Pants, Belt, and Boots
Vance wears classic bootcut blue jeans sitting at his natural waist, anchored by a standard brown leather belt with a rectangular metal buckle. The denim wash leans medium to light, consistent with late-seventies utility wear, with enough break at the bottom to drape easily over the boot tops without bunching awkwardly.
For footwear, brown lace-up combat or work boots anchor the bottom of the costume. The boots should look practical and sturdy rather than polished. A light dusting of powdered fuller’s earth or dilute acrylic wash across the toe caps and soles helps tone down new leather and ties into Vance’s rough-and-tumble reputation.
Taming the Voluminous Hair
Vance’s hair is his most identifiable visual feature. He sports a full, shoulder-length mane of feathered dirty-blonde curls with substantial volume across the crown and temples. Out of the bag, synthetic retro wigs tend to sit flat or look overly glossy, so teasing the inner wefts with a fine-tooth comb is necessary to build up the required height.
Spraying the wig lightly with dry shampoo dulls artificial synthetic sheen and provides grip. Work hairspray into the root sections while gently fluffing the curls upward and outward with your fingers. The goal is an unruly, windblown shape that frames the face without looking like a stiff glam-metal costume piece.
Choker and Wristwear
Two small accessories give Vance’s outfit its idiosyncratic edge: a dark gray velvet choker and a wide black leather cuff on his wrist. The choker fits snugly against the neck without trailing ribbons or dangling charms. In the film, the soft velvet material contrasts sharply with his aggressive demeanor, making it an essential touch that knowledgeable fans immediately recognize.
On his arm, a wide black leather wristband with buckle closures secures his dominant wrist. Keep the rest of the arms free of rings or watches so the single cuff stands out against the bare forearm and denim vest.
A touch of SFX bruising or dirt makeup across the knuckles and cheekbone complements the outfit if you want to depict Vance right after one of his arcade alleyway scraps. Stippling a dark brown and plum cream makeup onto the knuckles creates the impression of someone who just defended his pinball territory.
