Assembling Brad’s Pre-Castle Wardrobe
Brad’s daytime outfit is a study in mid-1970s suburban respectability, and every piece works toward that same prim, buttoned-up silhouette. The light blue striped button-down shirt is your foundation—look for a slim fit with narrow vertical stripes, and keep the collar buttons fastened so the points sit neatly against your neck. Pair it with a dark navy or midnight blue sweater vest that fits snugly through the torso without pulling at the shoulders. The vest should sit high enough that only the shirt collar and a small triangle of fabric show above it.
The gray trousers carry the rest of the look. Choose flat-front dress pants in a medium charcoal or graphite tone, cut with a straight leg that tapers just slightly at the ankle. They should sit at your natural waist and break once over the tops of your shoes—Brad’s pants are never bunched or slouchy. A lightweight tan golf jacket completes the outer layer. The jacket should have a simple collar, a front zipper, and minimal detailing; think of it as a clean shell that adds warmth without adding bulk to the outfit.
Brown leather loafers are the only sensible footwear choice here. Penny loafers or similar slip-ons in a medium-to-dark brown work equally well. The key is that they look polished and conservative rather than fashion-forward, and they should fit comfortably enough for several hours of standing at a convention or midnight screening.
The tortoise shell glasses are the single most recognizable part of Brad’s costume, so they deserve the most attention. Look for thick, dark brown frames with a slightly rounded rectangular shape and clear lenses. The frames should be substantial enough to read as vintage eyewear from across a room—thin wire glasses will not capture the character. Many costume glasses are available in this exact style, and prescription lenses can be fitted if you need them.
Grooming is straightforward: part your hair cleanly on one side and keep it short and neat, using a small amount of pomade to hold the part in place. Brad’s hair never looks styled or sculpted, just tidy. Shave cleanly before wearing the costume, and keep a razor on hand for touch-ups if you are at an all-day event.
The layering order matters more than it might seem. Shirt tucked into trousers first, then the sweater vest pulled down smoothly over it, then the jacket left unzipped so the vest and shirt collar remain visible. The collar points should stay crisp and outside the vest’s neck opening throughout the day, so an ironed collar will hold up much better than a wrinkled one.
If you are attending a shadow cast performance where water props are involved, bring a lightweight raincoat or wear the jacket zipped during the interactive scenes. The costume itself is otherwise simple to maintain—no delicate fabrics, no intricate closures, nothing that requires constant adjustment.
