Rudy Davis has always been the sharpest dresser in the Junkyard Band. While the rest of the gang leans into patched denim, oversized beanies, and rumpled workwear, Rudy steps out in an unapologetic clash of 1970s street fashion: an oversized orange cap, contrasting knit layers, and bright purple bellbottoms.
Recreating this costume comes down to nailing the proportions and color blocking. Animated designs rely on clean, saturated planes of color, so the goal is finding garments that match those tones without looking like mismatched thrift finds.
The Oversized Newsboy Cap
Rudy’s headwear is an exaggerated, slouchy eight-panel newsboy cap in bright orange. Unlike modern flat caps that hug the skull, his cap has considerable volume above the ears and a wide brim that sits tilted over one eye.
Retail caps often arrive pressed flat from packaging. If the crown collapses, stuffing a small amount of polyester batting or lightweight crinoline inside the lining restores that rounded cartoon dome. Positioning the brim slightly cocked to the side immediately captures his cocky, self-assured posture. An Orange Newsboy Hat provides the right foundation and fabric volume for the look.
Layering the Turtleneck and Sweater Vest
The upper body features an unmistakable color clash: a Light Purple Turtleneck worn underneath a sleeveless Red Sweater Vest. The vest sits square across the shoulders with low armholes, letting the lavender sleeves take up visual space from shoulder to wrist.
Choose a lightweight, fine-gauge knit or cotton blend for the turtleneck. Heavy knitwear causes rapid overheating under convention lighting, especially when layered beneath another wool or acrylic garment. The collar should sit high and snug against the throat, folded down once to form a crisp, structured band.
The Red Sweater Vest needs a ribbed waistband that anchors cleanly at the waist. Rudy wears his layers tucked into high-rise pants, creating a crisp division between the red knit and the purple trousers below. Flared Trousers and Footwear

As lead guitarist of the Junkyard Band, Rudy’s signature stage prop is his guitar. While the animated band occasionally plays cobbled-together instruments made from discarded junk, Rudy is most frequently illustrated with a solid White Electric Guitar.
Hauling a real solid-body electric guitar around an event floor gets exhausting, as genuine instruments typically weigh seven to nine pounds. A wide, padded guitar strap helps spread that weight across your shoulder blades, or you can swap out the steel bridge and tuning pegs for lightweight plastic parts if you are repurposing an old, unplayable instrument exclusively for cosplay.
