Building the Unmistakable Look of Jaws
The costume itself is a study in contrast: immaculate formal wear worn by a character whose entire purpose is destruction. Start with a crisp white collared dress shirt. It should fit properly through the shoulders and chest, with a collar that sits neatly against your neck. Since the shirt will be visible beneath the suspenders, a standard button-front style in a breathable cotton blend works well for long wear.
For the trousers, choose brown dress pants with a traditional cut—pleated or flat-front, but definitely not slim or tapered. Medium to dark brown shades match the on-screen look best. The pants should sit at your natural waist, since the suspenders will anchor there.
The dark red suspenders are the one piece of color in the entire outfit, and they do a lot of work. Clip-on or button-on styles both work, but button-on suspenders paired with trousers that have interior buttons will stay more secure throughout the day. If you already own a black leather belt, wear it as well; the combination of suspenders and belt is consistent with how the character appears on screen.
Brown dress shoes complete the lower half. Any standard pair of brown oxfords or derbies will do—there is no distinctive detail here worth overthinking, just make sure they are comfortable enough for standing and walking for hours.
The metallic teeth grill is the entire costume. A costume grill that fits over your natural teeth is the right approach; there is no need for prosthetics or makeup. These grills come in a few sizes, so measure your teeth against the sizing guide before ordering. A grill that shifts or slips when you smile will ruin the effect, so a snug fit matters more than the exact shade of silver. Practice wearing it at home before the event—speaking and smiling with a grill takes a little adjustment, and you want to be able to flash that grin on command without fumbling.
If your own hair does not match the character’s short, wavy black style, a men‘s black wig is the simplest solution. Look for one with a natural parting and a bit of wave or texture rather than a flat, shiny synthetic look. Style it back from the face with a small amount of pomade or hairspray so your teeth remain the focal point. The wig should sit snugly but not tightly; a wig cap underneath will keep your own hair contained and prevent shifting.
Once dressed, the physical performance carries the character. Jaws does not speak—he looms. Stand at your full height, keep your shoulders back, and move with slow, deliberate steps. A wide grin with the grill in place, held for a few seconds, is the signature expression. When posing for photos, a slight head tilt or a slow turn toward the camera reads far more menacing than any exaggerated stance.
