John Egbert wears several distinct looks throughout Homestuck, but each variation shares clean, bold blocks of solid color and straightforward silhouettes. Whether assembling his standard everyday outfit, bright yellow Prospit dream pajamas, or the hooded Heir of Breath God Tier regalia, the foundation relies on casual pieces paired with clean graphic emblems.
Because his visual design originated from minimalist webcomic sprites, translating John into reality means focusing on fabric shades and sharp graphic placement without overcomplicating construction. Selecting the proper blue tones, centering decals cleanly, and shaping his intentionally messy hair matters far more than over-tailoring simple loungewear.
Classic Everyday Outfit
John’s initial Act 1 appearance remains the simplest to build. The core consists of a white or green Slimer shirt worn over straight-cut white pants and low-profile white sneakers. The green graphic shirt displays the iconic Ghostbusters logo silhouette, immediately establishing his goofy, prank-loving personality.
Straight-leg white pants or flat-front chinos work best because they maintain clean lines while matching the original sprite proportions. For footwear, plain canvas low-tops or retro tennis sneakers keep the outfit grounded and comfortable across long convention hours.
Prospit Dream Pajamas
On the golden moon of Prospit, John wears a monochrome sleepwear set consisting of a bright golden-yellow long-sleeve shirt, matching yellow pants, and contrasting royal blue shoes. The primary graphic across the chest is the crescent moon emblem.
Matching the dye lot between separate yellow tops and bottoms requires care. Aim for cotton or cotton-blend jersey basics in a warm sunflower yellow rather than neon or mustard tones. The moon decal can be applied using heat-transfer vinyl or an iron-on patch positioned squarely in the center of the chest. Flat blue slip-on shoes provide the comic-accurate color break at the ankles.
God Tier Heir of Breath
Upon ascending to the God Tier, John trades his pajamas for the Heir of Breath uniform. This set layers a cerulean blue shirt and matching trousers under a sweeping blue cape, finished with pointed yellow shoes and the swirling wind symbol across the torso.
The Air Wave decal features the curly spiral representing the Breath aspect. Placing this decal cleanly onto the blue shirt before donning the cape prevents bubbling and warping. For the cape, a lightweight polyester or rayon with good drape catches airflow during movement. If creating the distinctive oversized hood, ensure the neckline rests comfortably without sliding backward under the garment’s weight.
Canary yellow slip-ons or fabric slippers complete the God Tier outfit. In comic illustrations, these shoes feature pointed, curled toes. While flat yellow shoes serve well as a sturdy base, you can temporarily shape foam inserts inside soft shoe covers to emulate the whimsical storybook curl.
Wig and Face Styling
John’s hair is jet black, short, and windswept, with choppy bangs framing the forehead and stray tufts sticking out at odd angles. A short layered black wig can be styled with a dab of matte pomade or light hairspray to separate the locks into clumped points without looking stiff.
Heavy square black-rimmed spectacles are essential for completing the face. Some cosplayers choose to wear white body paint on exposed skin to mimic the stark paper-white aesthetic of Homestuck’s human sprites. If you go this route, prep the skin with a barrier spray, set water-based face paint thoroughly with translucent powder, and seal it with fixing spray to prevent transfer onto bright collars and cuffs.
