Rintaro Okabe Steins;Gate Cosplay Guide

Rintaro Okabe spends most of his time in the Future Gadget Lab pacing the floor in an unbuttoned lab coat, an ordinary undershirt, and a pair of casual slippers. His outfit reflects his self-styled mad scientist persona overlaid on an otherwise mundane college student wardrobe. Recreating it relies less on tailoring complex garments and more on getting the drape, layering, and distinctive scruffiness right.

Because the base clothes are relatively straightforward, the pieces need to sit together naturally rather than looking like stiff, brand-new stage props. The contrast between his trailing white coat and casual indoor shoes anchors the silhouette immediately.

The Lab Coat

The white lab coat defines the entire profile. Okabe wears his loose and completely unbuttoned, letting it flare out behind him when he moves. Aim for a coat that reaches at least down to the back of your knees rather than a short consultation jacket. A standard cotton-polyester blend works well because it holds its shape along the lapels without feeling overly rigid. You want standard notched lapels and open front pockets where you can shove your hands or slip a flip phone.

Shirt, Belt, and Trousers

Underneath the coat, Okabe wears an understated heather gray crewneck t-shirt tucked cleanly into straight-leg English khaki trousers. The shirt should fit comfortably without being overly tight or oversized, keeping the focus on the outer coat.

A black military-style web belt with a brass plate buckle holds the trousers in place. Because the t-shirt is tucked in and the coat stays unbuttoned, the flat brass buckle remains visible from the front. The khakis should sit at your natural waist with a straight cut that breaks slightly over your footwear.

The Slippers

One of Okabe’s most specific visual quirks is wearing hunter green indoor slippers everywhere, even when venturing out onto the streets of Akihabara. Standard open-back or low-profile slip-on slippers in dark green match what he wears around the lab.

If you plan to walk around a convention floor or outdoors for hours, standard fabric-soled house slippers will wear out quickly and offer zero grip. Swapping in a pair with a thin rubber sole or adhering a rubber grip sheet underneath makes walking across hard concrete much safer without changing how they look from above.

Wig and Hair Styling

Okabe’s dark hair is swept back from his forehead in loose, unkempt spikes, with a few stray strands falling forward around his temples. A short black wig with decent density at the hairline serves as the starting point.

To shape it, work backward from the front hairline using a bit of matte styling paste or hair wax to direct the bulk of the hair upward and back. Set the sections with a firm-hold hairspray while blow-drying on low heat. Keep the spikes from looking too rigid or symmetrical; his hair should look slightly disheveled from late nights at the workbench rather than sharply sculpted.

Accessories and Props

A classic metallic flip phone held up to one ear instantly completes the character’s signature pose when talking to imaginary conspirators. Aside from that, adding faint stubble along the jawline with a stippling sponge or eyebrow pencil captures his chronically exhausted graduate student look.
