The Church Lady Costume Guide: How to Recreate the Look

Assembling the Church Lady’s Prim and Proper Silhouette

The purple skirt suit is the foundation of this costume, and it does most of the recognizability work for you. A tailored blazer with shoulder pads and a modest button front, paired with a matching A-line skirt that hits at or just below the knee, captures the right conservative retro shape. Thrift stores and online resale sites are good places to start, since this style of suit was common in the late 1980s and early 1990s. A rich medium purple is ideal, though a deep plum or even a muted lavender will work if the cut is right.

If the suit you find has a plain neckline, a high-collared blouse in navy blue or crisp white worn underneath solves the modesty issue without any sewing. The collar should sit neatly inside the jacket lapels, with the top button done up. This layered look is exactly what the character wears and avoids the need to alter the jacket itself.

The wig and glasses are what make the costume read instantly. A short gray wig with tight waves or curls, styled into a rounded helmet-like shape, is the correct choice. Look for one labeled as a “perm” style rather than a sleek or straight cut. The glasses are equally specific: clear or lightly tinted frames with a cat eye shape, worn low on the nose so the character can peer over the top of them. These are still manufactured by several retro eyewear brands, and inexpensive versions are available through costume retailers.

Sheer nude or natural-tone knee-highs go under the skirt, and black slip-on loafers with a low heel complete the lower half. Any plain loafer will do; the character’s shoes are not a distinctive element, so comfort should guide the choice. If you plan to be on your feet for several hours, pick a pair you can wear all day rather than a costume shoe that only looks the part.

Accessories are minimal. A modest handbag in black or navy is appropriate, and it gives your hands somewhere to rest between interactions. A clipboard also works well and ties into the Church Chat sketch format. Skip any jewelry beyond simple stud earrings or a thin pearl necklace, as the character keeps her appearance restrained.

Makeup should be light and age-appropriate for the character. Soft rose blush, a neutral foundation, and a muted mauve or dusty pink lipstick are enough. The expression and posture carry the performance far more than any cosmetic detail.

The one piece worth practicing before the event is the Church Lady dance. The high kicks and rhythmic arm movements are physically distinct, and the costume needs to accommodate them. If your skirt is tight or your blazer restricts arm movement, test the range of motion before committing to those pieces. The wig should be secured with bobby pins around the ears, especially if you plan to move actively.
