Scarlett GI Joe DIY Costume Guide

Scarlett’s classic combat uniform relies on a bold contrast between a neutral base and high-visibility yellow athletic wear. The foundation is a full-coverage grey unitard layered under a yellow sleeveless leotard, paired with matching yellow gauntlet gloves and knee-high boots. It is an unmistakably comic-book tactical design, but putting it together in real life mostly comes down to balancing stretch fabrics and getting the saturated yellow pieces to match in tone.

Beyond the bodysuits, the silhouette gets grounded by combat accessories: a wide black utility belt loaded with side arms, throwing stars, small grenades, and her trademark crossbow. Because the outfit is fitted from neck to toe, comfort depends heavily on how breathable your base fabrics are and how cleanly the layers sit against each other.

Layering the Unitard and Leotard

The grey full-body unitard serves as the second skin for the entire build. A matte spandex or nylon-spandex blend with four-way stretch lets you move comfortably without the fabric sheering out over your knees and elbows. A front- or back-zip style works fine, though a back zipper keeps the torso clean under the yellow layer.

Slip a yellow leotard directly over the grey suit to establish the core visual line of the uniform. A tank-style or scoop-neck leotard gives clean armhole cutouts that let the grey sleeves show through naturally. If the leotard fabric is thin, the grey underneath can dull the yellow, so denser stretch knits or lined dancewear will give you a much brighter, cleaner finish.

Gloves and Footwear

Scarlett wears flared gauntlet gloves and tall boots that bookend the limbs in solid yellow. Wide-cuff gauntlets made from stretch faux leather or structured vinyl hold their flared shape over the unitard sleeves without sliding down your forearms. If the cuffs feel floppy, ironing lightweight interfacing along the inside edge stiffens them up quickly.

For footwear, knee-high yellow boots pull the lower half together. Flat or low-heeled riding-style boots are far easier to walk in during a long day on convention floors than high fashion heels. If you already have comfortable combat or riding boots in another color, yellow stretch boot covers can be a practical alternative to buying a dedicated pair of colored leather boots.

Belt Rig and Tactical Hardware

A wide black elastic or webbing belt defines the waist and breaks up the yellow torso. It needs enough tension to support lightweight holster attachments and pouches without sagging or riding up against the slick spandex underneath. Fastening small hook-and-loop strips to the underside of the belt and the leotard can keep everything locked at your natural waistline.

Clip a couple of lightweight plastic toy grenades and ninja throwing stars onto the belt webbing. Scarlett carries specialized field munitions, so spray-painting plastic props with matte black or olive drab paint removes any cheap toy gloss and gives them an issued, tactical appearance.

The Crossbow and Hair

Her primary weapon is a compact crossbow. A lightweight suction-cup toy crossbow provides the right basic geometry while staying convention-safe and easy to carry across long hours. You can sand down any manufacturer logos and paint the limbs and stock with satin black and gunmetal acrylics to match her field gear.

Her hair is deep red with soft, loose waves. If you are styling a synthetic lace-front or standard wig, give the front sections a light tease or gather the crown into a high half-ponytail to match her animated combat appearances while keeping strands out of your face.
