Dee Dee’s design is defined by extreme cartoon proportions translated into simple ballet wear. She spends her time dancing through Dexter‘s lab in a short pink flare dress, bright white tights, and oversized ballerina slippers, topped off by enormous blonde pigtails that flare straight out from her head.
Because her outfit consists of only a few bright, solid pieces, getting the colors and silhouette aligned is what makes the character unmistakable. A pastel or baby pink might look sweet, but Dee Dee wears a punchy, warm pink that stands out sharply against clean white.
The Pink Flare Dress
Dee Dee wears a sleeveless A-line minidress with a flared, skater-style skirt that mimics a simplified tutu. A simple pink flare dress serves as the foundation here. The cut should sit high enough on the waist to give the skirt that bouncy, flared shape without requiring a separate crinoline underneath.
If the fabric is somewhat lightweight, wearing a pair of pink dance trunks or boy-shorts underneath keeps you comfortable when moving around, especially with the higher hemline typical of skater cuts.
Legs and Footwear
Dee Dee’s legs are impossibly long and stick-thin in the animation, encased in solid white from the hips down to her feet. A pair of fully opaque white tights is essential; sheer or semi-opaque pantyhose let skin tone through and dilute the clean, graphic contrast the cartoon relies on. Nylon-spandex dance tights with a high denier hold up best to a full day on your feet and won’t snag easily.
Her footwear combines hot pink ballerina flats with ribbons wound around the lower legs. Traditional pointe shoes are impractical and painful for walking across hard venue floors, so soft ballet slippers or flexible flats are the sensible substitute. To get her signature crisscross look, run lengths of hot pink ribbon from the inner arch of the shoe, crossing them twice over the ankle and shin before knotting them below the calf.
