The entire costume hinges on a purple unitard with real stretch. A cotton-spandex blend works well because it moves with you on a crowded convention floor instead of binding at the shoulders or hips. Zip-back styles are easier to get in and out of than pull-on versions, especially if you are layering a cape and scarf over everything. White athletic shorts go over the unitard; any pair with a loose fit and an elastic waistband will do, since most of the leg is hidden by the purple suit anyway.
The yellow cape and scarf are what make the silhouette read correctly from across a room. A lightweight cape that falls just past the shoulders is enough—Mineta’s is not dramatic, just a simple yellow drape. Pin it at both shoulders rather than the center of the chest so it does not bunch up around the scarf. The scarf itself should be a bright yellow knit or woven fabric, wrapped once around the neck and tucked into the collar of the unitard. This keeps the two pieces visually connected and prevents the scarf from riding up toward your chin as you move.
The hair is the part that takes the most time. Start with a purple balaclava that fits snugly against your head; a loose one will shift and rotate as you walk. You will need hollow plastic ball ornaments in a grape-purple shade—the kind sold for Christmas trees in packs of twelve or more. Use fabric glue to attach them directly to the balaclava, working from the top of the head downward and leaving the face opening clear. Arrange them so they touch each other, clustering them tightly to mimic the packed spheres of his quirk. The hollow balls keep the weight down, which matters more than you might expect; a solid plastic version will pull the balaclava forward by the end of the day. Let the glue cure for at least a few hours before trying the headpiece on.
Bright yellow gloves cover his hands, and yellow boot covers handle his feet. If you cannot find boot covers that match the glove shade, you can make simple ones from yellow stretch fabric that slip over your shoes and tuck into the unitard’s ankles. The small purple dots on the chest and shorts are easy—cut circles from purple felt and sew or glue them in place. A length of purple ribbon around the waist can help blend the white shorts into the purple unitard if the contrast feels too stark.
For the balaclava edges, double-sided fashion tape pressed along the opening helps hold it against your skin. This prevents the headpiece from creeping backward when you turn your head or bend down to pick something up. If you are wearing glasses, test the fit before gluing on all the balls; you need enough clearance around the eyes that the headpiece does not push your frames down your nose.
Skip heavy makeup. A light concealer to even out your skin tone is all you need, since the balaclava covers most of your face anyway. The energy you bring to the character matters more than any cosmetic detail—Mineta is expressive and exaggerated, so practice a few wide-eyed, panicked expressions in the mirror before heading out. That comedic delivery is what sells the costume more than any single accessory.
