The Criminologist presents a formal, mid-century lecture aesthetic that stands in sharp contrast to the glam extravagance everywhere else in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sitting behind his desk with his case files and charts, his outfit relies on tailored layers: a dark gray jacket, a crisp white waistcoat, pleated evening shirt, and a rich ascot tied snugly at the throat.
Recreating this look is mostly an exercise in assembling formalwear components that sit together cleanly. Because audience call-and-response during screenings famously fixates on his lack of a visible neck, how you arrange the shirt collar and ascot matters more than finding rare or bespoke garments.
The Collar, Ascot, and Waistcoat
The neck arrangement forms the centerpiece of the costume. You need a white dress shirt with vertical front pleats, ideally with a stiffened wing collar or a standard turndown collar worn buttoned all the way up. Tuck a deep red patterned ascot directly into the open top button of the shirt or wrap it snugly against the collar band. An ascot with a subtle woven foulard or paisley design mirrors the scholarly, vintage character much better than flat satin.
Over the pleated shirt goes a white formal vest. A low-cut, classic evening waistcoat with three or four front buttons allows the shirt’s pleated bib and the puffed drape of the ascot to show across the chest. Fasten the vest cleanly so it sits flat against your torso beneath the jacket lapels without bunching up.
Jacket and Pocket Square
His tailored jacket is a deep charcoal or dark gray suit coat rather than jet black. That subtle difference in shade keeps the jacket distinct from the black dress pants beneath it. Single-breasted styles with standard notch lapels work well, though peak lapels also suit his professorial presence. Keep the jacket unbuttoned so the white waistcoat stays fully visible.
Fold a clean white handkerchief into a neat straight-fold or slight point and tuck it into the breast pocket. It provides a sharp, balanced highlight against the dark gray wool.
Trousers and Footwear
Standard black dress pants pair with the gray jacket to complete the broken suit look. Choose a straight-leg or classic fit in mid-weight suiting fabric that drapes cleanly over the shoes. Finish the lower half with plain black dress socks and polished black leather dress shoes, such as simple oxfords or derbies. Because the character spends almost all his screen time seated behind a mahogany desk, keeping the lower half plain and conventional is both screen-accurate and simple to coordinate.
Props: Cigarette Holder and Case Files
Two defining hand props immediately identify the character during his narration scenes: his extended cigarette holder and his casebook. A slender black cigarette holder gives you an authentic object to gesture with while delivering stern observations or charting the steps of the Time Warp. If your venue allows unlit props, pop a fake cigarette into the tip for added texture.
Carry a plain black hardcover notebook or ledger to represent his criminological dossier. Having the book tucked under your arm or open in your hands gives you a natural way to hold yourself in costume, especially if you plan to stand at a podium or deliver dialogue at an interactive screening.
