Allan from Smiling Friends Costume Guide

Allan’s design in Smiling Friends is about as minimalist as character designs get: a tall, slender red silhouette with a single upright antenna on his head, simple facial features, and a light blue necktie. Because there are no elaborate armor pieces, layered garments, or complex props, recreating him comes down to getting the solid crimson color uniform across your body and nailing that distinctive tie.

The primary challenge here isn’t assembling a dozen different wardrobe items, but translating a flat, untextured 2D cartoon figure into real fabric without losing the clean shape. Every visible part of Allan is bright red except for his neckwear, so the base garment has to do almost all the heavy lifting.

The Red Base Layer

A full-coverage red spandex suit serves as the foundation for the entire build. The Red Zentai Spandex Body Suit provides the all-over solid red coverage Allan needs, stretching from head to toe in one continuous piece. Since Allan doesn’t wear a shirt or trousers, you want a suit that fits cleanly against your body without heavy bunching at the joints.

If you plan to wear a full-head zentai hood, keep in mind that seeing and breathing through spandex for long stretches can get tiring. Many builders choose to either cut eye openings and add mesh inserts, or wear the suit zipped down to the neck and use matching red face paint on exposed skin. If you keep the enclosed hood, test your visibility indoors before taking it anywhere crowded.

The Light Blue Tie

The only actual piece of clothing Allan wears is his necktie. A Light Blue Tie provides the exact visual contrast seen in the show, cutting straight down the middle of the bright red torso.

Because Allan has no shirt collar, knotting the tie around a bare spandex neck can cause it to slide around as you move. A safety pin or small strip of fashion tape pinned to the back of the tie will hold the knot right at the throat and keep the blade hanging straight down your chest throughout the day. Standard neckwear width works fine here; a classic flat tie mirrors his clean cartoon proportions better than a slim or knit version.

Head Silhouette and Face Accents

Allan has a single curved red strand or antenna extending from the crown of his head. You can replicate this piece using a core of aluminum armature wire wrapped in lightweight craft foam and coated in red spandex scraps or painted to match the suit. Securing the base of the wire to an interior headband hidden beneath the hood keeps it upright while allowing enough flex so it won’t snap if bumped.

His facial structure is stripped down to small black oval eyes and a modest, slightly rounded nose. Felt cutouts, heat-transfer vinyl, or fabric paint applied directly to the spandex hood keep the features flat against the surface. If you are doing exposed-face makeup instead of a closed hood, black eyeliner and simple red prosthetics or contouring give you a similar simplified cartoon effect without obstructing your breath.

Footwear and Practical Handling

Zentai suits have thin fabric feet that wear through quickly if walked on directly across hard flooring or pavement. Slipping slim water shoes or thin foam insoles inside the suit protects your feet without altering the continuous red leg line from the outside. Alternatively, wearing low-profile red canvas slip-on shoes over the feet preserves the monochrome palette while providing necessary traction and durability for walking around.
