Building the Layered Silhouette
The entire costume depends on getting the layering sequence right. Start with a cream long-sleeve shirt as the base, then add a red-orange tee over it. The red-orange layer should sit high enough that the collar visibly peeks out above the next layer—this small flash of color is what breaks up what would otherwise be a monotonous pale stack.
Over the tee goes a light pink button-down, left completely unbuttoned. On top of that, a white button-down, also unbuttoned. Both shirts should be a size or two larger than your normal fit. The sleeves will bunch and slide around as you move, which is exactly what you want. The white shirt’s collar should sit loosely around your neck, not buttoned or starched into place.
The light gray denim jacket goes over everything. It should be slightly oversized but not comically so—it grounds the layers underneath while still looking like it was grabbed without thought. For the bottom half, relaxed white jeans keep the washed-out palette consistent. They don’t need to match the top precisely; they just need to be pale and loose.
The pale blue robe is the single most important garment in the costume. It goes over absolutely everything and should be worn open, hanging loosely off the shoulders. A bathrobe with a shawl collar works best because the lapels create a dramatic V-shape that frames the layered shirts beneath. The contrast between the soft, casual robe fabric and the stiff, haphazard clothing underneath is what makes the character look wrong in a way that’s hard to pinpoint.
For the scarf, any patterned black-and-white design works. Drape it loosely around your neck rather than wrapping it neatly—it should look like it was thrown on as an afterthought and left to settle wherever it landed. The pattern adds visual noise to the chest area, which helps distract from the fact that the individual layers are otherwise ordinary clothing.
The blonde wig is worth matching carefully. It should be shoulder-length with loose curls, but the texture matters more than the exact style. You want hair that looks thin and slightly greasy, not bouncy or styled. If your wig arrives too clean, run a small amount of styling product through it to flatten the shine and break up the curl pattern. Part it unevenly.
Weathering is where this costume comes together. The character does not look laundered. Wash the shirts and jeans several times before wearing them. Rough up the hems and cuffs with sandpaper or a pumice stone. For dirt and grime, a small amount of gray or brown fabric paint rubbed into the knees, elbows, and collar areas reads as accumulated wear rather than staged dirt. Keep the weathering subtle—the goal is a man who doesn’t care about his appearance, not a homeless caricature.
Nothing should fit properly. If a piece fits well, size up. The robe should slide off one shoulder. The jacket sleeves should extend past your wrists. The shirts should bunch at the waist. This deliberate misfit is what creates the character’s erratic, bulky silhouette.
For the makeup, start with a cream foundation several shades lighter than your skin tone and apply it evenly over your face and neck. Use a cool gray contour to hollow the cheeks, darken the eye sockets, and sharpen the jawline. The contouring should be heavy and visible—this is not a subtle everyday look. Finish with light pink lipstick applied normally. The contrast between the pale skin, gray shadows, and pink lips is what creates the unsettling, doll-like quality.
The last piece is the posture. The clothing will do most of the work, but the way you carry yourself matters. The character hunches forward slightly, with shoulders raised and movements that are deliberate but jerky. Practice walking with your head tilted down and your eyes looking up through the hair. The costume is comfortable enough to wear for long periods, so the physical performance is the only part that will tire you out.
