Building Dutch’s Victorian Frontier Silhouette
The foundation of Dutch’s look is the collarless striped shirt. Find one with thin vertical stripes in muted tones—white with black or gray striping works best. Cotton or linen keeps it breathable, and since the collar sits open at the throat, you don’t need to worry about tie knots or collar stays.
Over that goes the black waistcoat, which carries most of the visual weight. A proper Victorian-style vest with a low-cut front and shawl lapels gives the right period shape. Fit matters more here than anywhere else in the outfit—the vest should hug your torso without pulling at the buttons. Leave the bottom button undone; that’s both historically accurate and more comfortable when you sit down.
The jacket is a structured black twill coat with a notched lapel. It doesn’t need to be a period reproduction; a modern slim-fit suit jacket in dark fabric works fine. What matters is that the lapels lay flat over the vest and the jacket length falls around mid-hip. If you already own a black suit jacket, check how it looks with the vest before buying anything new.
Match the jacket with pinstriped trousers in black or charcoal. The pinstripes should be subtle—thin white or silver lines on dark fabric. Trousers that taper slightly at the ankle sit better inside cowboy boots than wide-leg cuts. You can use the pants from a black suit if the pinstripes are faint enough.
The wide-brimmed black cowboy hat is the piece that makes the outfit read instantly. Look for a felt hat with a creased crown and a brim that curves up slightly at the sides. A hat with a hatband in silver or black leather adds the right detail. If the hat fits loosely, adhesive foam strips inside the sweatband will keep it secure without being visible.
The red pocket square is a small piece, but it’s central to Dutch’s color scheme. A crimson silk square folded into a simple puff or presidential fold in the jacket’s breast pocket gives the right splash of color. Bright red, not burgundy or rust.
Gold watch chains drape across the front of the vest. You can use actual pocket watch chains or costume jewelry chains—the key is the drape. Anchor one end at a vest buttonhole near the shoulder and let the chain fall in a gentle curve into the opposite pocket. Two chains crossing at slightly different angles creates the layered look Dutch wears in the game.
For the lower half, a heavy leather gun belt with dual holsters carries replica revolvers. The holsters should sit low on the hips, angled forward. Check your convention’s prop policy before choosing the revolvers—many events require orange tips or peace-bonding, so plan for that before you arrive. Black cowboy boots with metallic spurs complete the outfit. The spurs don’t need to be functional; decorative ones that attach over the boot heel give the same look without the noise.
For hair and facial hair, sweep the hair back with a medium-hold pomade. A handlebar mustache with a soul patch underneath completes the face. If you can’t grow the mustache, a quality costume mustache with spirit gum is a viable alternative. Gray powder at the temples adds age and authority.
When you’re assembling this, the order matters. Get the vest fitted first since it’s the centerpiece. The jacket can be slightly looser, but the vest needs to sit cleanly against your torso. The shirt and trousers are the easiest pieces to source from regular clothing stores, so spend your budget on the vest, hat, and watch chains.
