Dru Gru Costume Guide: DIY Cosplay

Dru operates as Gru’s visual inversion in every respect. Where Gru relies on a dark, muted palette of charcoal and black wool, Dru wears head-to-toe pristine white paired with an exuberant mane of golden hair. The costume works because of that direct contrast, stripping away heavy villain layers in favor of a clean, bright monochrome aesthetic.

Recreating the outfit is relatively straightforward on paper, but the difficulty lies in consistency. Because every visible garment is white, discrepancies in fabric undertones or silhouettes stand out immediately. Nailing the look requires matching your whites and shaping the distinct hair and collar silhouettes.

The White Suit Silhouette

Dru wears a fitted white zip-up jacket featuring a high funnel neck that zips closed up to the throat. A white lightweight zip jacket provides the right foundation here, especially one with a clean athletic profile and minimal branding. Any contrasting colored logos, dark zipper tape, or colored drawstrings break the solid white effect and should be removed or painted over with fabric paint.

On bottom, straight or slim-cut white pants balance the exaggerated torso proportions. Dru’s legs appear comically thin compared to his upper body, so baggy or relaxed cuts distort the animated shape. For footwear, white loafers finish the lower half cleanly. Sleek slip-on dress shoes mimic his pointed animated silhouette far better than athletic sneakers or bulky boots.

The Scarf

Dru mirrors Gru‘s habit of wearing a neck scarf, but his version swaps the gray-and-black stripes for an unpatterned, solid white textile. A long white cotton-blend scarf provides adequate drape without piling on excessive warmth around the throat. Loop it once around the neck so both ends fall loosely down the chest over the jacket zipper, mirroring Gru’s familiar styling in an all-white format.

Building and Styling the Hair

The hair is Dru’s defining visual element and the fastest way to signal the character. It sits parted down the middle, fanning out in thick, buoyant, shoulder-length blonde waves that frame the face.

Starting with a long blond wig, the main task involves adding structure so the fibers do not fall flat against the shoulders. Teasing the roots with a fine-toothed comb builds the required internal volume, while low-temperature steam helps redirect the fibers upward and outward from the center part. Finishing with a firm-hold hairspray locks the outward flare in place and keeps the hairline tidy.

Color Consistency and Base Layers

Fabric undertones can make or break an all-white ensemble. Cool-toned optical whites look starkly different from warm creams or ivories, and mixing them under venue lighting can make certain garments appear discolored. Aim for crisp optical whites across the jacket, trousers, scarf, and footwear.

Undergarments also require attention under bright convention lighting or camera flashes. White cotton underlayers often show through white synthetic outerwear; wearing skin-tone or beige base layers underneath the pants and jacket prevents visible outlines and keeps the overall presentation smooth.
