The 2024 revival Emcee is less about armor and more about the tension between soft, handmade textures and sharp, formal accents. The entire costume hangs on a few distinct pieces: a crochet top, maroon wide-leg pants, a teal party hat, and stage makeup. None of these are difficult to source, but the fit and the way they interact make the difference between a generic “cabaret” outfit and this specific character.
Start with the crochet white top. This is the piece that gives the whole look its tactile, artisanal quality. You can find these at thrift stores, vintage shops, or online marketplaces—search for “white crochet top” or “handmade lace top.” The fit should be slightly loose but not boxy; you want it to skim the torso so the open weave is visible. If the sleeves are too long, they can be rolled once at the cuff, but avoid altering the body of the shirt. The key is that it looks like a single, deliberate garment, not a costume top.
The maroon wide-leg pants are the silhouette-defining element. They should be cut generously through the thigh and fall straight to the floor. When you stand, the hem should just graze the top of your boots—enough to cover the laces but short enough that you don’t catch a heel. Fabric matters here: a fluid rayon or viscose blend will move when you walk, which is essential for the character’s theatrical stride. Avoid stiff cottons or anything with too much structure. If you find a pair that’s too long, have them hemmed rather than cuffed, as a cuff will break the clean line.
A matching maroon wide waist belt ties the top and pants together. The belt should be at least two inches wide and sit at your natural waist, cinching the crochet top slightly so it blouses over the belt. A simple leather or faux-leather belt with a plain buckle works fine; the color match to the pants is more important than the hardware.
The teal party hat is the single most recognizable element of this costume. A standard conical party hat in a bright, saturated teal is what you’re after. The original has a slight sheen, so look for one with a glossy finish rather than matte cardboard. Because the hat needs to stay on through a full day of movement, a thin elastic chin strap is the practical solution. Attach it by poking two small holes on opposite sides of the hat’s brim, threading the elastic through, and knotting it on the inside. If you have longer hair, the strap will be hidden; if your hair is short, consider a clear elastic band.
The maroon scarf is a secondary accent that repeats the pant color near the face. A lightweight, rectangular scarf in a similar maroon tone, draped loosely around the neck, is all you need. It should not be tied tightly or styled neatly—the intent is a casual, almost thrown-on drape that contrasts with the more deliberate pieces. One end can hang longer than the other.
Black leather gloves and maroon lace-up boots complete the outfit. The gloves should be snug-fitting, not costume-style oversized, and they should reach past the wrist. Any black leather or faux-leather glove with a fitted silhouette will work. For boots, a simple lace-up style in maroon or burgundy leather is ideal. They need to be comfortable for extended wear, as this is a costume you’ll be on your feet in. If you already own black boots, they’ll work in a pinch, but the maroon color ties the lower half together more cohesively.
The makeup and hair are where the character’s intensity comes through. Black eyeliner should be applied heavily—this is not a subtle look. A thick line along the upper lash line, extended slightly outward, creates the dramatic, almost doll-like gaze. For the hair, orange temporary color spray is the way to go. Apply it in a well-ventilated area, spraying from a distance of about six inches and then combing through with a fine-tooth comb to distribute the color evenly. The goal is a textured, slightly wild orange that looks less like a dye job and more like a deliberate statement. If your natural hair is dark, you may need two coats to get the color to read clearly.
When you put the whole thing on, the way you move matters as much as the clothes. The wide pants and the crochet top give you a fluid, almost languid range of motion, and the hat adds an unpredictable focal point. The costume is comfortable enough to wear for a full convention day, but the real work is in committing to the character’s exaggerated confidence. The pieces will do the visual heavy lifting; you just need to fill them out.
