Samuel Brett’s appearance in Alien defines the space-trucker aesthetic. As an engineering technician aboard the USCSS Nostromo, he spends his working hours in the humid underbelly of the commercial towing vessel, and his clothing reflects that industrial reality. Instead of sleek military uniforms, Brett wears a lived-in mix of practical workwear paired with an unexpected tropical shirt.
Recreating this costume comes down to layering, realistic distressing, and getting the proportions right. Everything should feel loose, functional, and heavily used.
The Nostromo Cap
Brett wears his cap perched high and slightly tilted back on his head. The cap features a dark navy crown, gold embroidered oak leaves across the bill, and Nostromo lettering along the front panel. Straight out of the package, replica caps look far too clean for an engineer working near coolant exhaust vents. Rubbing fine-grit sandpaper gently along the brim edge softens the stiff factory finish, while a little diluted acrylic wash or tea staining into the sweatband replicates months of long-haul maintenance work.
Layering the Shirts and Jacket
Brett’s upper half layers three distinct garments. The base layer is a simple white short-sleeve button-down shirt, worn untucked with an open collar. Over this sits a vivid blue Hawaiian shirt featuring a birds of paradise floral print, left completely unbuttoned to show the white shirt underneath.
Over both shirts, Brett wears a rugged brown cotton moto or utility jacket. The jacket should fit comfortably loose over the shirt layers so you can wear it unzipped or slung casually off one shoulder. Complete the jacket by attaching the Nostromo flight wings patch onto the right chest or upper sleeve using fabric adhesive or a clean edge stitch.
Trousers and Footwear
For pants, white or light cream work trousers provide the correct base. Carhartt cargo pants or relaxed utility work trousers offer the durable texture and pocket layout seen on screen. Distressing matters far more than finding an exact stitch-for-stitch match; the engineering decks are filthy, so take dry graphite powder, charcoal, or diluted dark paint and smudge the knees, pocket flaps, and lower hems. The pants should look like they have absorbed years of industrial grime.
On his feet, Brett wears off-white or beige high-top Converse sneakers. Ridley Scott placed several crew members in classic canvas high-tops to emphasize their blue-collar civilian status aboard the ship. Keep the laces tied somewhat loosely, and scuff the pristine white rubber sidewalls with a dab of dark shoe polish or dirt before wearing them out.
Weathering and Finishing Touches
The defining element of Brett’s look is the humid grime of the Nostromo’s lower decks. A light application of pomade or hair wax gives your hair the damp, disheveled appearance caused by perpetual steam leaks. Smudging a small amount of cosmetic grease paint on your forehead, neck, or forearms sells the illusion of someone mid-shift.
For a handheld prop, you can carry an industrial cattle prod or utility wand styled after the one Brett uses while searching for Jones the cat. Maintain a slow, relaxed demeanor with hands resting in your pockets, and let the cap sit slightly askew.
