Jack Burton’s look in Big Trouble in Little China is pure mid-1980s working-class action hero: a graphic tank top, faded denim, fringed moccasin boots, and an unapologetic feathered mullet. Putting this costume together is mostly an exercise in sourcing the right signature pieces rather than heavy crafting, but the specific cuts and wear matter if you want people to recognize the Pork-Chop Express driver immediately.
The outfit lives and dies on its centerpiece—the Fu Manchu tank top—paired with footwear that no practical truck driver would actually wear into an underground martial arts war. Getting those two elements right does most of the heavy lifting.
The Fu Manchu Tank Top
The custom printed tank top is non-negotiable for Jack Burton. It features a stylized Chinese warrior print—often referred to as the Fu Manchu or Uncle Chu design—stretching across a standard white ribbed undershirt. A plain white tank top or a generic graphic won’t cut it; this specific print is what tells people you are Jack Burton rather than a generic 80s action guy.
Fit should be snug through the chest and torso, sitting naturally over your waistband without being skin-tight. In the film, Jack spends the entire runtime sweating, crawling through water, and dodging blades, so a brand-new, bright white shirt can look a bit sterile. Giving the tank a quick wash with a tiny splash of black tea or a gentle dusting of diluted fabric dye knocks back the pristine factory white and gives it that lived-in trucker feel.
Denim and Footwear
Jack wears light-stonewash Levi’s 505 regular-fit jeans tucked cleanly into his boots. Avoid modern skinny cuts or heavy distressing; you want a standard straight-leg 80s denim wash that sits comfortably over your hips. The legs need enough slack to allow movement, but not so much fabric that they bunch up uncomfortably when stuffed down the shafts of your footwear.
The boots are the most distinctive silhouette choice in the entire costume: knee-high brown suede moccasin boots with fringe along the upper collar. You will want them laced securely up the calf over the tucked jeans. Because soft-soled moccasin boots offer very little arch support on concrete convention floors, slipping a supportive insole inside makes a massive difference over several hours on your feet.
Hair and Styling
Kurt Russell’s dirty blonde hair in 1986 is the platonic ideal of an action mullet—longer in the back, heavily layered and feathered along the sides, with decent height in the front. If you are starting with a synthetic wig, it will almost certainly come flat out of the packaging. You will need to backcomb the roots around the crown lightly and hit the top with a blow dryer on low heat to build up that windblown, tousled volume.
Keep the color grounded in dirty blonde or light brownish blonde rather than platinum. A little matte pomade or dry texture spray worked through the ends helps separate the strands so the hair moves naturally instead of sitting in a solid synthetic block.
Leather Cuff, Weapons, and the Lipstick Smear
Jack wears a wide black leather cuff watch on his left wrist. It is a simple, rugged band with double buckles that sits broad against the forearm, anchoring the bare-arms look.
For weapons, Jack carries an Intratec Tec-9 machine pistol and a boot knife. The Tec-9 prop replica kit gives you the distinct ventilated barrel shroud and straight magazine that define his primary firearm. Check venue prop policies regarding firearm silhouettes, orange barrel tips, and peace bonding before walking through the door.
His backup weapon is the push dagger tucked directly into the top of his right moccasin boot. A lightweight fake retractable knife prop slides safely into the boot fringe and stays out of the way until you pull it out for a photo.
The most memorable detail from the film’s climax is the bright red lipstick smeared across Jack’s mouth after his kiss with Gracie Law. He never wipes it off, charging through the final confrontation with a vibrant red smudge across his lips and jaw. A swipe of true red lipstick dabbed onto your lips and lightly blurred with a finger instantly sets your costume apart and lets everyone know you paid attention to the movie.
