Start with the base layers because they determine how everything else sits. A white button-up shirt with a pointed collar works best—the collar needs to stand up slightly beneath the vest, and the fabric should be a natural fiber like cotton so it breathes under the layers. Gray jeans should be straight-leg and slightly loose, not skinny or heavily tapered, since Graham’s silhouette is practical rather than fashionable. You can distress the jeans with sandpaper or a razor blade, focusing on the knees and cuffs where wear would naturally occur.
The tactical vest is your main armor piece. A black SWAT-style vest with MOLLE webbing and a front zip or buckle closure gives the right shape. The key is fit: it should compress slightly against the shirt but still allow full arm movement, since you’ll be wrapping your arms afterward. If the vest has removable padding, take it out—it reduces bulk and makes the whole costume sit flatter against your torso. Weathering the vest with dry-brushed gray and brown acrylic paint adds depth, but keep it subtle; the bandages are the visual focus, not the vest.
The bandages are the entire costume. Buy several rolls of standard 4-inch medical gauze—you’ll need more than you think, roughly eight to ten rolls for full coverage. Pre-stain them before wrapping by soaking the gauze in strong black tea for an hour, then letting it dry completely. This gives a yellowish-brown aged tone that reads as grime rather than fresh medical dressing. For the arms, wrap from the wrist upward, overlapping each pass by half the gauze width. For the legs, wrap from the ankle upward to the knee or mid-thigh, depending on how much leg you want covered. Secure each end with a small safety pin tucked under the previous layer so it doesn’t catch on anything.
For the head wrap, wear a dark balaclava underneath to cover your neck, ears, and hairline completely. Then wrap the gauze around your skull, leaving a generous opening around your eyes—roughly the width of your hand. The gauze should cover your forehead down to just above your eyebrows and extend down over your nose bridge. Wrap tightly enough that nothing shifts, but leave your jaw and mouth mostly uncovered so you can speak and breathe normally. Tuck the loose ends under existing layers and pin them in place.
Graham’s shirt stays remarkably clean compared to the rest of him. This contrast matters more than any single piece of weathering. Leave the shirt mostly pristine, but add a few faint smudges of dark brown paint near the collar and cuffs where sweat and grime would transfer from the bandages. Fake blood stippled onto the gauze around the arms and chest adds a gruesome detail, but apply it sparingly—a few concentrated patches work better than covering everything in red.
The belt is practical rather than decorative. A black tactical belt with a few pouches—something like a simple utility pouch or magazine holder—gives you a place for your phone and wallet while staying true to the character. The pouches should be empty or lightly loaded so they don’t sag. Black cowboy boots finish the lower half. They should be scuffed and worn, not polished; if they’re new, drag the toes across concrete and rub some dirt into the leather.
For the prop, an airsoft Desert Eagle in black or silver is the standard choice. Check your convention’s weapon policy before committing to a specific model—many events require orange tips or zip-tied actions. If you want to avoid the hassle of an airsoft gun entirely, a holstered prop or a simple leather-bound book (Graham carries the Bible) works as an alternative that still fits the character.
Because the bandages are the most time-consuming part, practice the wrapping at home before the convention. Time yourself and figure out how long each arm and leg takes. You’ll want to wrap at the venue or shortly before, since the gauze shifts and loosens over hours of walking. Bring extra pre-stained gauze and safety pins in a small bag to make repairs during the day. The costume gets warm—the vest traps heat against the wrapped torso—so plan for breaks in cooler areas and drink water regularly.
