Ethan Winters has one of the most grounded designs in modern survival horror. While earlier Resident Evil protagonists leaned heavily into specialized tactical gear, BSAA body armor, or police uniforms, Ethan looks like an ordinary civilian caught in freezing conditions who grabbed durable winter clothes out of his closet. His outfit in Resident Evil Village is built almost entirely on rugged everyday streetwear layered for harsh weather.
Because Ethan’s face is famously hidden or obscured throughout the games, the outfit’s recognizability comes down to silhouette, accurate layering, and the physical wear he endures. Getting the jacket collar, sweater neckline, and weathered details right separates this look from someone who just got back from doing yard work in the winter.
The Outer Layers and Collar Structure
The core of Ethan’s appearance is his tan canvas work jacket worn open over a zip-up sweater. The jacket itself resembles heavy-duty workwear with a structured turn-down collar and a boxy, straight fit through the torso. Aim for a piece in washed tan, khaki, or light brown duck canvas that has enough weight to hold its shape without collapsing against your shoulders.
Underneath the jacket sits a charcoal or heather dark wool pullover with a high stand collar and a front zipper. Ethan keeps this partially unzipped, which lets the collar frame his neck while exposing the crewneck collar of a basic grey t-shirt underneath. The contrast between the tan canvas jacket, the dark rib-knit sweater collar, and the light grey base shirt gives his upper body its distinct three-tier neckline.
For the base layer, a standard heather grey cotton crewneck t-shirt sits flat against the collarbone. It needs little attention since only a small triangle of fabric shows beneath the sweater’s zipper, but sticking to a neutral light grey keeps the color balance accurate against the darker knitwear.
Pants, Belt, and Boots
Ethan wears standard straight-cut blue jeans that fit comfortably without looking baggy or tapered. Medium-to-dark wash denim with subtle factory fading along the thighs matches his in-game model best. A simple brown leather belt holds them up, resting flat beneath the hem of the sweater and jacket.
His footwear consists of dark brown lace-up work boots with round toes and lugged rubber outsoles. In the game, Ethan trudges through deep snow, frozen mud, and crumbling castle courtyards, so the boots should feel substantial rather than sleek. Tucking the jeans slightly or letting the cuffs break naturally over the tops of the boots gives the lower half the right utilitarian weight.
Sidearm and Holster Setup
Ethan carries a compact semi-automatic handgun secured in an open-top hip holster on his right side. The holster mounts directly to his belt, riding high enough on the hip that the jacket hem partially drapes over it when his arms are relaxed. A simple matte black paddle or belt-slide holster works well here, holding a prop replica pistol that mimics his standard LEMI sidearm.
If you plan to carry the prop pistol at a convention, check the venue’s weapon policy in advance. Most events require orange barrel plugs, peace-bonding zip ties, or holster security straps, so keeping the prop non-functional and brightly marked ensures you clear security checkpoints smoothly.
Weathering and Hand Bandages
Clean clothes will make this costume feel unfinished. Ethan takes an absurd amount of punishment throughout the village, and distressing the garments sells the survival horror context. Dusting the knees and boot toes with diluted acrylic washes or weathering powders mimics dried mud, while light dabs of white textile paint along the shoulders and jacket cuffs simulate frozen snow residue.
The most distinct storytelling detail involves his left hand. Early in the game, Ethan loses two fingers to a Lycan attack and spends the rest of the story with medical tape and dirty gauze wrapped around his palm and knuckles. Wrapping your left hand in basic elastic bandage or cotton gauze, then staining the wraps with watered-down brown and dark red paint, gives the costume an immediate visual anchor that fans will recognize on sight.
