Building Richtofen’s Battle-Worn Field Uniform

The base of this costume is a smoke gray dress shirt with sleeves rolled to just below the elbows. The roll should look functional rather than neat—loose enough to suggest someone who pushed them up mid-experiment and never fixed them. Leave the collar unbuttoned if you want a more unhinged look, or button it fully for the disciplined military side of the character.

Over the shirt goes a beige utility vest. The cut matters more than the fabric: it should sit snugly across the chest without pulling at the shoulders, with enough structure to hold its shape over the shirt. Military surplus vests work well here, as do shooting vests with multiple pockets. The neutral tan provides the visual anchor for the rest of the outfit.

Charcoal gray straight-leg pants tuck into tan brown military boots. The boots should be sturdy and lace high—jump boots or combat boots in a matching brown leather tone. The trousers need enough room in the leg to tuck cleanly without bunching awkwardly around the ankle.

The leather accessories carry the character. An M7 brown leather tanker shoulder holster straps across the chest and immediately establishes the military tone. Adjust it so it sits against your ribs without shifting when you walk—a holster that slides around will pull at the vest and break the silhouette. A brown leather hip belt with utility pouches completes the gear. The pouches serve double duty as storage for your phone and wallet, but keep them balanced around your waist so the belt doesn’t sag to one side by mid-afternoon.

Matching the leather tones across the belt, holster, and boots is worth some effort. They don’t need to be identical, but they should sit in the same brown family. A black belt with tan boots will pull the whole outfit apart.

Weathering makes this costume work. Before adding any blood, sand the seams, cuffs, and collar with fine sandpaper to break up the newness of the fabric. Focus on the high-wear areas—elbow creases, the hem of the vest, the strap of the holster. Then apply fake blood sparingly: light splatters along the vest edges, sleeve cuffs, and shoulder straps. Heavy drenching looks like a prop failure rather than a battlefield survivor. Once the blood is placed, seal it with a fabric-safe matte fixative spray so it doesn’t transfer onto other people or your car seats.

Break the boots in before the convention. Walk around in them with thick socks for several days—this costume requires a lot of standing and walking, and blisters will ruin the manic energy you’re trying to project.

Style your hair with a neat side part using pomade, but let it loosen slightly as the day goes on. The contrast between the disciplined uniform and the slowly disheveling presentation matches the character’s arc from controlled scientist to something less stable.
