Major Bedhead Costume Guide

Major Bedhead has one of the most eccentric silhouettes from 90s children’s television, combining clown flair with bike courier gear. The entire look is built on intentional color clashing and mismatched layers, especially athletic pieces worn directly over traditional sleepwear.

Pulling this costume together doesn’t require complicated tailoring, but it does demand getting the unusual layering order right. If you assemble the pieces in standard sequence, it looks like random clothes; layered correctly, the character is unmistakable.

The Pajama and Athletic Layers

The foundation of the costume is a green-and-white striped pajama set, worn beneath contrasting athletic garments. The long-sleeve striped button-up shirt goes on first, followed by a bright orange tank top pulled right over it. The scoop neck and armholes of the tank leave the striped sleeves, collar, and hem visible, mimicking the courier vest effect seen on screen.

Down below, the layering pattern repeats. The matching striped pajama pants serve as the base, and a pair of hot pink bicycle shorts pulls on directly over them. Spandex cycling shorts over loose cotton pajamas can bunch up if the pants are too baggy, so straight-leg pajama bottoms tend to sit much flatter under the shorts waistband and thighs.

Headwear and Hair Styling

The head setup relies on the contrast between a rigid blue bicycle helmet and huge, frizzy orange hair spilling out beneath it. A bright orange-red synthetic wig provides the wild volume needed around the ears and neck.

Fitting a standard bicycle helmet over a high-volume wig can be tricky. You will likely need to expand the helmet’s internal adjustment wheel or remove the thicker interior foam pads to seat the helmet securely over the wig cap without it popping off. Once the helmet is strapped down, fluff and backcomb the exposed hair outward so it flares horizontally past the rim. A standard red foam clown nose finishes the face without requiring heavy makeup.

Delivery Bags and Accessories

As the resident courier of Clowntown, Major Bedhead carries his mail gear in bright waist packs. Layer a purple fanny pack alongside or slightly offset from a pink fanny pack around the waist. Wearing two packs replicates his loaded utility belt and helps break up the transition between the orange tank top and the pink bike shorts.

For handwear, slip on a pair of blue fingerless gloves. They match the bicycle helmet while leaving your fingers free to handle mail props or handlebars.

Footwear and the Unicycle

The lower leg styling keeps the high-contrast color scheme going down to the floor. Pull bright blue crew socks up over the ankles of the striped pajama pants, tucking the cuffs in slightly to keep them from dragging. Bright yellow sneakers provide a sharp contrast against the blue socks.

The unicycle is Major Bedhead’s primary mode of transportation and his defining prop. If you can ride one, it creates an incredible visual for outdoor shoots or performance spaces. If you’re attending a crowded convention where riding isn’t permitted or practical, you can easily walk the unicycle alongside you as a handled prop by holding the seat, or substitute a stack of oversized letters and delivery parcels.
