Izzy Hands Costume Guide: Our Flag Means Death

Izzy Hands runs Blackbeard’s crew with brutal efficiency, and his wardrobe reflects that non-stop practicality. While the rest of the Revenge crew leans into colorful silks or heavy theatrical leather, Izzy sticks to a stripped-down, all-black naval kit designed for utility and combat.

Recreating Izzy comes down to getting the layered textures right. Because almost every piece is black, the visual interest relies entirely on the interplay between soft shirt fabric, structured leather, metallic hardware, and his heavily weathered grooming.

Core Layers and Vest

The base starts with a relaxed black pirate top worn underneath a fitted black leather vest with silver buttons. Leaving the shirt collar slightly unlaced at the throat allows it to peek out from beneath the vest without bunching up around your neck. Rolling the sleeves up to the forearms keeps the silhouette functional and gives your gloves room to sit cleanly at the wrists.

The leather vest anchors the upper body. A cut that sits close to the torso works best, reflecting Izzy’s strict, buttoned-up posture. Silver buttons provide the primary contrast against the dark leather, making distinct metallic hardware an essential element of the chest piece.

Trousers, Boots, and Utility Leather

Below the waist, Izzy keeps things simple with slim black jeans tucked directly into tall black pirate boots. Straight-leg or tapered denim works best here because excess bulk around the ankles bunches up uncomfortably inside knee-high boot shafts.

Sturdy leather accessories complete the rigging. A thick black leather belt secures the waist, while a black leather crossbody pouch runs across the chest from shoulder to hip. That diagonal strap breaks up the front of the vest and provides accessible storage for convention essentials without breaking character. A pair of fitted black leather gloves completes the arms, leaving your hands looking prepared for swordplay or shipboard line handling.

Hair, Facial Hair, and Eyeliner

Grooming does a tremendous amount of heavy lifting for this costume. Izzy’s hair is a short, swept-back salt-and-pepper mix. When styling a gray and black wig, use a small dab of matte pomade or texturizing paste to push the fibers back off the forehead with a slightly damp, windblown texture rather than a polished blowout.

The gray and white goatee needs crisp, defined edges around the mouth while staying trimmed close to the jawline. Spirit gum or prosthetic adhesive keeps lace-backed facial hair firmly anchored through talking and long convention days.

For the eyes, a black eyeliner pencil applied along the waterlines and smudged lightly into the lower lash line gives Izzy his trademark exhausted, menacing glare. Keeping the liner slightly uneven and worn-in mirrors life at sea far better than clean, graphic wings.
