David Zinn’s costume design for The SpongeBob Musical translates Bikini Bottom’s eccentric elder into an exuberant mix of clashing patterns, vintage textures, and exaggerated grandfather silhouettes. Rather than relying on heavy prosthetic fish appliances, the stage production grounds Old Man Jenkins in recognizable human garments piled together with theatrical flair.
The core of the outfit rests on a distinctive knitwear stack: an earthy argyle cardigan draped over an oceanic turquoise vest, worn on top of a collared button-down. Paired with high-waisted plaid trousers, wire-rimmed frames, and unkempt white hair, the look balances stage eccentricity with wearable everyday pieces.
Building the Upper Body Layers
Getting the torso right comes down to balancing three separate garments without losing definition between them. Start with a light green button-down shirt as your base layer. A soft mint or sage cotton poplin keeps the collar crisp beneath the knitwear while remaining lightweight under multiple layers.
Directly over the shirt goes a turquoise vest. A V-neck knitted sweater vest allows the green collar to stand out cleanly around your neck while exposing enough color at the chest. Selecting a slightly fitted vest prevents excess bulk from bunching up beneath the outer sweater.
The outer piece is a brown argyle cardigan featuring an oversized diamond motif. Wearing this cardigan unbuttoned—or securing only the bottom two buttons—lets the turquoise vest and green shirt collar peek through clearly. Opt for a relaxed, slightly slouchy cut in the cardigan to achieve that disheveled, lived-in grandfather drape seen on stage.
Trousers and Footwear
For the bottom half, brown plaid pants provide the necessary pattern contrast against the argyle knitwear. The musical embraces pattern clashing intentionally, so a muted houndstooth, glen plaid, or windowpane check in tan and brown tones works well alongside the diamond knit up top.
Wear the trousers higher on your natural waist to shorten the torso and lengthen the leg line in classic senior-citizen fashion. A straight-leg or relaxed taper cut drapes cleanly over your footwear without pooling excessively around the ankles.
Brown penny loafers complete the lower half. Classic smooth leather or synthetic slip-ons in a warm chestnut or dark chocolate shade ground the retro aesthetic. Plain dark or neutral dress socks visible above the loafers preserve the character’s vintage stage silhouette.
Hair and Eyewear
The headpiece transforms the vintage clothing into an unmistakable stage character. A short, messy white wig with frayed texture mimics Jenkins’ perpetually startled, windswept cartoon silhouette. Tease the crown slightly using a fine-tooth comb and hairspray to give the synthetic fibers an unruly, static-charged volume rather than a neat comb-over.
Finish the face with a pair of round glasses. Small, circular wire frames resting slightly low on the bridge of your nose emphasize the animated, peering expression typical of the character during ensemble numbers. Clear non-prescription lenses keep your vision unobstructed while maintaining the correct theatrical proportions.
